13 of 14 people found the following review helpful 5 Star Product at a 1 Star Price!, December 20, 2009 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Canon Tripod Mount Ring D (Electronics) There is no sense stating the ring should have been included with Canon's EF 100mm f/2.8L MACRO IS USM Lens because it wasn't! That said your alternative is to go on the hook for well over $200. for the ring. It is precision made and a quality product. As one would expect, at this price, it fits perfectly on the lens. Although simple to use once you figure out how to open the ring for mounting on the lens you would think a brief instruction sheet or something would have been included. Think again. You'll receive the ring packed in a styrofoam sleeve inside a Canon box. The ring instructions albeit brief are in the manual included with the lens. If you are serious about MACRO photography i.e. using a tripod, then this becomes a required item. Bottom line, love the product, hate the price.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful The optional tripod ring mount for the Canon 100mm 2.8 L-series lens, June 8, 2011 By Zetau (The Righthand Coast, US) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Canon Tripod Mount Ring D (Electronics) PRODUCT QUALITY: This tripod mount ring "D" for the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens is the same high quality as Canon's tripod mount rings that are *included* with the more expensive L-series lenses.
PRODUCT USE: This tripod ring easily mounts on the lens, and holds it very securely and with improved balance.
PRODUCT DRAWBACK: If you use a battery grip mounted on your Canon body, and you use a tripod quick-release adapter (such as the Manifrotto), you should note this:
Because of the ring's proximity on the lens, which is very close to the camera body, mounting it on a tripod or monopod with a quick-release adapter is not so quick.
In the open position, the quick release lever comes into contact with the battery grip, preventing it from attaching the camera/lens to the tripod.

No thanks - I'll deal with the frustration of reorienting verticals on a tripod and pocket the cash. Luckily, I was able to pick this one up in used (like new) condition on Amazon's marketplace for a fraction of that cost at $120, and I suggest you try and do the same(or on craig's list, ebay, etc.)
There's not much to review to be honest. Those of you looking for a tripod collar for your new L macro probably know exactly what it's for, and need to buy this. Those asking themselves *what* this is for and *if* they need one, probably don't.
Canon's new L macro doesn't neceessarily need a tripod collar, as the balance is fine when mounted to my 5D, attached to a tripod head. Where this collar shines is in the following situations:
1) When you need to quickly... Read more
