As a professional videographer and photographer, I get tired of production equipment manufacturers charging far too much for basic equipment that only has minimal production material and construction. Red Star's new Pro II Version Follow Focus and rails system perform the way you expect pro gear work in the field. The matte box is sturdy (but not too heavy) for those long shoots, and the rails and shoulder mount go a long way to stabilize the video quality, and provides added accessory room for video lights, shotgun mics, and other items. As for the follow focus itself...just get it. It totally rocks. It's by FAR the best deal in a follow focus on the market right now (especially with the adjustable stop pins) and when I saw you can use it without a cage or rails as advertised, I was even more pleased with the purchase. I have shot some commercial, run and gun work on my Canon T2i and love the the picture quality. Thus I decided this would be my first long form video shot exclusively on DSLR's. I have been eyeing DSLR cinema kits the last two years but their price has always been ridiculous, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found this kit for $350 - totally worth the gamble and I pulled the trigger.
My main motivation for buying the kit was dressing up the DSLR to look like it belonged on the set, to use the matte box to knock out lens flare from key and fill light spill and to get a nice "big knob" for focus control. This kit did all of that and did it well. We had a Nikon D7000 as our main camera, another as a second and a Canon T2i for grabbing BRoll.
