This matte box far exceeded my expectations. I was expecting it to be somewhat subpar in quality compared to the "ridiculously expensive" boxes, but was delighted to see it was full production quality and worked just as I needed. It's very solid and when everything is locked down, it holds, even in a steady wind when filming outdoors.
The only thing I would have liked to see is a bellows style lens attachment instead of the rubber rings, but they work just fine and give you several sizes for different lenses, so it's not really an issue.
Please note, this is probably not the best option for light and fast 'run and gun' style shoots because its pretty heavy duty and almost all metal. But, then again, Red Star makes a smaller and lighter matte box for that purpose, which is also very inexpensive.
This thing makes my camera look like it came straight out of Hollywood on a production set, and while it certainly looks complicated... Read more

Red Star DV DSLR Pro II Matte Box = Poorly assembled by the manufacturer, January 18, 2012 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Red Star DV DSLR Pro II Matte Box Complete Bundle w/ 15mm Swing-away Arm, Top French Flags & Side Wings, Rubber Donut, Filter Stage and Filter Tray (Electronics) 2 of the phillips head screws that fasten the flag holders to the plastic portion of the box, were cross threaded and not driven in fully at the factory. In one instance this caused the box to crack when the screw next to it was properly threaded and driven in. The phillips head fastening screws in the swing away unit were all loose.Also the matte box was packaged poorly by the manufacturer allowing loose metal parts to scratch the unit during shipping.
Over all it looks like it could be a good value for the price, if the manufacturer can get their quality control at the factory up to par. I immediately sent it back, so I can't comment on functionality or usability.

So I ordered another one in hopes that the 1st one was just a bad unit.
Do not buy this unless you are comfortable completely disassembling and then reassembling it.
My 2nd unit came scratched, but not as bad as the 1st. I decided the scratches were acceptable... Read more
